babies, new moms and sleep

I stumbled upon this article on Offbeat Mama not too long ago:  Confessions of a progressive mama: I sleep-trained my baby.

When I was pregnant, I looked at all the sleep-training books and thought, I’m not doing this.  It seemed mean and cruel.  I couldn’t bare the thought of forcing my baby to go to sleep on my schedule.  I was convinced that there were other methods out there and that eventually, my baby would sleep through the night on her own.  Isn’t that just how nature works?  Well, at around five months, baby girl was sleeping through the night in her own crib.  I was so proud. No routine. No sleep-training.  And it lasted until she was about nine months old.  Well, the joke was on me.  Eight months later and she still has issues sleeping through the night.  Now when I look back on the situation, I wish I would have sleep-trained her.  If I ever have another child, he/she will be on a sleep schedule.  My baby girl is about a year and a half and goes to bed around 10 pm and wakes up around 6 am with about two minimal wake-ups during the night.  I envy the moms who have used this method and now their children sleep 10-12 hours straight through the night.
